Peace Corps Volunteer Kimberly Washington was charged with running an education program at a girls’ learning center in the desert country of Mauritania in West Africa. The conservative Muslim culture of the region made girls’ sports an anomaly. However there was a basketball court at the center where she worked but it was never used. Girls’ had never played sports before and they lacked the equipment. Kim was determined to change this.
A micro grant from Ball for All allowed Kimberly to outfit her team with the necessary uniforms and sneakers and the rest was history.
You can watch a video of these pioneering young women as they create one of the country’s first girls’ sports team.
